Freedom Instruments Toolkit | Project

Freedom Instruments Toolkit (F.I.T.) is an art project that allows participants to critically engage the question, “Can we design freedom?” Working from the idea that freedom can’t be designed en masse, F.I.T. offers a peer-to-peer process for interviewing individuals about their values related to freedom. The Toolkit instructs interviews using a specialized, custom-printed deck of cards and board to provoke discussion. Now more than ever, it’s important to talk about what freedom means—systematically, structurally, and personally—and what forces and ideas shape it in our lives. This project was started by three members in the inaugural Yerba Buena Center for the Arts fellowship cohort. It now is expanded to consider freedom in the commons, and in a more public-facing setting, thanks to continued support provided by grantmaking agencies. Project in collaboration with Liat Berdugo and Kelly Gregory.
