Cheng+Snyder is an Oakland, CA based experimental/ multi-disciplinary studio, founded by Irene Cheng and Brett Snyder in 2006 in New York. The firm produces work at a wide range of scales, from books to buildings. We are especially interested in projects that integrate new media and architecture. We believe in design as a medium to provoke fresh thinking about the status quo and to instigate public discourse about the built environment and the city.
Irene Cheng
Irene Cheng is a principal of Cheng+Snyder, and an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the California College of the Arts. Cheng writes frequently on issues related to architecture and culture. Her articles have appeared in Frieze, Cabinet, 32BNY, and Surface, and she is coeditor of The State of Architecture at the Beginning of the 21st Century (The Monacelli Press, 2004). She holds a an M.Arch from Columbia and a Bachelor degree in Social Studies from Harvard, and recently completed her Ph.D dissertation in Architecture History and Theory at Columbia. She is currently researching the history of utopian architecture in nineteenth-century America.
Brett Snyder
Brett Snyder, AIA is a principal of Cheng+Snyder and an Assistant Professor of Design at the University of California, Davis. Snyder works at and researches the intersection of architecture, media, and graphics with a particular interest in urban spaces. Recent projects include Smart Sidewalks, a winning entry to the NYC Reinvent Payphones competition, Museum of the Phantom City an architectural iPhone app to view visionary but un-built architecture, and S.Alt City an interactive building mural in Syracuse, New York. Snyder’s award winning work has been exhibited internationally including the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale and SXSW. Snyder is a recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts award and a Van Alen New York Prize Fellowship. Snyder holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Carnegie Mellon University and an M. Arch from the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. Snyder has taught at several institutions including Columbia University, Cooper Union, Pratt, Syracuse, and University of the Arts, Philadelphia.
