Writer's Block I
Located at the mouth of the Sheepscott River in Westport, Maine, this new structure combines two functions; writing studio and boat house. The small190 square foot "block" was conceived by interlocking program and allowing design elements to double function. C
anoe storage = combination workspace + bed. Interior structure = book + utility shelving. The windows and awning are arranged to maximize views and allow passive heating and cooling. These elements were"carved" out from the traditional saltwater barn form, animating the exterior, but allowing a peaceful interior. The monolithic form with concealed corner doors and punctured corner windows adds a mysterious quality to this tranquil retreat.
